I'm pretty accepting of gender and calss issues in anything written pre-1960 or so, to be honest, so that particular aspect didn't bother me. In fact, I found Lewis' disparaging comments about the so-called progressive school attended by Jill and Eustace where girls aren't taught to curtsey quite amusing. I'm glad I wasn't the only person to react this way towards the obvious religious message of the book, though. In previous books I thought he worked it in quite cleverly, so it's a shame his approach changed to much in the final book.

I read these as a child, and even though I adored the other ones, I immediately picked up on the religiousness in this one and never liked it. So I don't think you would have had a better reaction reading it then. :)

Have you read The Magician's Book by Laura Miller? If not, I highly recommend it!

I'm afraid that "The Last Battle' is the one book in the series that I have never been able to find anything good to say about. As you say, Lewis allows his own beliefs to shine through too strongly and as they are so far from my own I have problems with that. It isn't just his religious beliefs but also the stance that he takes on gender and class that I find objectionable. A great shame, because there is much good writing in the earlier books.
