I also found it hard to identify with Stephen and Andrea (like you I'm closer to Max and Marianne's ages) and I thought the minor characters such as Grace and Si were far more interesting. I noticed the switching from past to present tense too and although it didn't really bother me I couldn't see any reason for it either.
