It was completely absorbing and continually surprising. I was impressed at how understandable it made everything as well; I could see why Mao rose to power and how that was maintained despite the odds.

What a wonderful selection of books. It’s a few years since I read Wild Swans but the memory lingers, and I remember it holding me in a way the few big serious books can.

I didn’t realise either until I picked it up from the Winchester Oxfam bookshop which always has one of those rotating wire racks filled with Viragos. It’s a title I’d been looking for anyway so I couldn’t resist. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps that one next for me then.

I read Wild Swans last year and it turned out to be one of my favourite books of 2010. I also loved Lady Audley’s Secret. I didn’t realise it had been published as a VMC.
