Thankfully it isn't one of the books that I have (yet), although I certainly won't be rushing to acquire it, or indeed any of her other books until I've braved those that I already own. The two I have waiting for me are For Love Alone and Miss Herbert (The Suburban Wife). I'll be saving them for a while, I think.

Oh definitely, the good ones have been excellent so far. Stead doesn't seem to be an author that translates particularly well outside of her time period, I think. It's good to know it wasn't just me!

I struggled with this one too - I'm sorry to say that there ARE VMCs duds, I've encountered quite a few on my travels - but the really good ones outweight it!

The only one of Stead's books that I've read is The Man who Loved Children. I think it's her seminal work but it is, as you say, worryingly chunky. And not for the faint of heart, either. I'm not sure I can recommend it exactly, but I did give it 3.5 stars and felt it was worth reading.

Hmmm ... not sure you'll be rushing out to read it, will you?!
