It's such a famous book, but I knew very little about it as well. I just recently read Robinson Crusoe, so I appreciate your comparisons. That was also a book that I was surprised by. I love the humor! That's my favorite thing about the book so far. It's good to know you won't be throwing in the towel. Great thoughts!

You're welcome. It's interesting to read things from this perspective, although Christianity has definitely taken a back seat in part deux, so we shall see how it develops.

Thank you very much for organising this and for your lovely comments. I often worry about finding the right voice for reviews and not lapsing into essay-mode too much, so it's great to hear that you like it!

So far it seems that my assumptions about Christianity are bourne out; Ahab is protrayed as a man who is demon haunted with his single-minded search for the white whale. I'm looking forward to seeing how it's described when the two meet again.

Hi Katie! Thanks for joining our readalong, sorry I haven't been very good about commenting. You're right - this book isn't ANYTHING like other Victorian literature, part of the reason it is so fascinating to me. Also, I love your insights about Christianity - it's obviously deeply embedded in this story but so far, kind of hard to understand why.

Lastly, you are a terrific writer! I often have trouble putting my thoughts about my reading in words. You do a great job.

I'm loving what I've read so far. And my goodness, but that's an insightful third-to-last paragraph, about Jonah and the whale and the swallowing of the Christ. I'll keep that in mind while reading -- thanks!

I hope you enjoy the next 3/4s! :D
